'Make Space' Campaign

Mslogo3

(UK) This parternship has still yet to catch the attention of mainstream media, which is a pity because it's a bold initiative.

The 'Make Space' campaign aims to create places to go and things to do for teenagers. Led by 4Children and supported with £3million funding from the Nestle Trust, they are bringing the issue of youth provision to the government and society.

Any youth club can join their scheme which will give them the opportunity to apply for:

Development funding of up to £10,000.
- The Nestle Make A Disc music programme.
- The Nestle Exercise Your Choice sports programme.
- Publications, advice and support plus a wide range of other benefits.

The campaign to develop a new generation of contemporary out of school clubs for young people between the ages of 11 and 16, has its roots in 2002 survey conducted by MORI and BMRB, which concluded:

- Eight out of ten teenagers are interested in the Make Space concept.
- Six out of ten teenagers, and eight out of ten parents think there is not enough for teenagers to do in the area where they live.
- Seven out of ten teenagers want the Make Space club to be where they can meet their friends (safely), do sports or chill out.
- One in four teenagers hang around with nothing to do when they are not in school and then are most likely to get into trouble.
- Eight out of ten teenagers are bored at some time or other. Boredom encourages teenagers to get into trouble through chasing 'the buzz' they get from testing the boundaries of authority.
- At any time, one in two parents does not know exactly where their teenagers are, who they are with or what they are doing when they are not in school.
- Seven out of ten parents and young people think that young people commit crime because there is not enough for them to do.
- One in three teenagers go home to an empty house and are more likely to get into trouble as a consequence.
